What is the Enneagram Type of Pastor Kong Hee?
The purpose of this article is not to judge whether Pastor Kong Hee is guilty or innocent of misusing S$24 million of church funds to finance his wife Sun Ho’s music career, which was portrayed as a religious mission (aka the Crossover Project). This article seeks to reveal his Enneagram Personality Type and NLP Meta Programs that has made him so charismatic and helped in growing his once upon a time fledging City Harvest Church some 25 years ago.
Pastor Kong Hee is most likely an Enneagram Type Three. This personality type is Driven, Image-Conscious, Success-Oriented and usually Highly Adaptable. The Enneagram Type Three is also known as The Performer, The Motivator, The “Can-Do” Person.
According to Nathan Avidan, an ex-pastor of City Harvest Church, this is what he said about Kong Hee: “Kong Hee is a pretty driven person – he’s driven to be successful, wrongly defined in getting the numbers… There was a lot of drivenness. Everyone was driven to perform, to work hard, to get numbers…” (Source: For the transcript of Nathan Avidan’s interview, please go to AllSingaporeStuff.com http://www.allsingaporestuff.com/article/ex-chc-pastor-what-really-goes-kong-hees-city-harvest-church)
Avidan also mentioned Kong Hee’s mentor Pastor Ulf Ekman, the former pastor of the Word of Life church in Uppsala, Sweden, had cautioned Kong Hee and his wife Sun Ho about this drive that their ministry had.
In Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP), Meta Programs are the keys to the manner in which we process information. They are basically how we form our internal representations and direct our behavior. In his book “Unlimited Power: The New Science Of Personal Achievement”, NLP Trainer and Success Coach Anthony Robbins describes the Meta Programs that people use to sort and make sense of the world.
Dominant NLP Meta Programs of an Enneagram Type Three:
- Criteria: Towards Accomplishments, Success and Looking Good
- Proactive: They are “Human Doings” Sorts mainly by Activity (also sorts by people and information)
- Towards: Goal oriented
- Future-Oriented: Willing to disregard present needs to develop future success
- Highly Visual: They dress to please
- Speech Tempo: Medium to Fast
- External Frame of Reference: They may bend over backwards to please or get the attention and/or approval of others
The Enneagram, on the other hand, is an exceptionally powerful tool to understand another’s point of view through their hidden fears and motivations, as well as ones own core beliefs and blind spots.
The Enneagram Type Three’s Focus of Attention:
Use of Energy:
- Acheiving the goal
- Getting the things done efficiently and quickly
- Staying active and busy
Underlying Issues that arise for Enneagram Threes
Deep down, an Enneagram Type Three believes that to gain approval and love of others, one has to promote an image of success and achievements, through constant ‘doing’.
At their worst, Low Functioning Enneagram Type Three’s can become opportunistic, deceitful, vain, embellishing, vindictive, self-centered and pretentious. The average Three’s are competent, self-motivated, optimistic, empowering, go-getting, industrious, efficient, persistent and focused. At the other end of the spectrum, the High Functioning Threes are truthful, thoughtful, team driven, pragmatic and responsible.
In the City Harvest judgment on 23 Oct 2015, Judge See described Kong as having a tendency to embellish or exaggerate. He said Kong could not have been ignorant that his wife did not actually appear on “official” Chinese government-issued first day covers, or sing the official Special Olympics theme song – all of which he claimed she did.
Another indication that Pastor Kong Hee is an Enneagram Type Three is his tireless motivational speaking style that preaches a lot of imperatives that inspires his congregation to lead an exemplary Christian life for the Lord.
Again, this article is not about whether Pastor Kong Hee is guilty or innocent of Criminal Breach of Trust (CBT). Throughout the past 140 trial days, Pastor Kong Hee has always maintained that the transactions were legitimate and he had acted on professional advice.
